My Child Finished a Coding Course but Can't Code

Your child finished the tutorials, maybe a whole course, and it looked like real progress. But when you ask them to make something of their own, they freeze. If that sounds familiar, your child is not behind or incapable. They are caught in a very common trap, and there is a clear way out.

The real test of learning begins when the tutorial ends.

A good coding tutorial feels like progress, and often it is a fine place to start. The child follows along, the project works, and everyone is pleased. But a tutorial quietly does the hardest part of the work for the learner. It decides what to build, in what order, and how to solve every problem along the way. The student presses the right buttons, but the thinking, the part that actually creates skill, was already done for them.

So when the video ends and the child faces a blank screen, they are stuck. Not because they are not smart, but because copying a finished path is a different skill from finding one.

A finished project is not the same as understanding. The question is whether your child can build the next one without the video.

The five-minute parent test

You do not need to know how to code to check this. After your child finishes a tutorial or lesson, ask them to do a few small things on their own:

Ask your child to…

  • Change the goal, for example, make the character move faster or the score count differently.
  • Add one original feature that was not in the tutorial.
  • Explain three decisions in the project and why they were made.
  • Fix a new bug you introduce by changing one thing.
  • Rebuild part of it without the video.
  • Use the same idea in a different project.

If your child sails through these, wonderful, they are genuinely learning. If they struggle, that is not a failure. It is simply a signal that they need a more structured progression, with feedback and gradually increasing independence, rather than another tutorial.

Why do coding tutorials make kids feel more advanced than they are?

A tutorial hands the learner every decision in advance, so the finished project looks impressive without the child having made the hard choices. It feels like progress because something got built, but the thinking that creates independent skill, planning, problem-solving, and debugging, was done by the tutorial, not the student.

My child completed a coding course but cannot code. What does that mean?

It usually means the course taught steps to follow rather than concepts to use. It is not a sign your child failed or lacks ability. It is a sign they need structured practice with feedback and gradually more independence, so they can start from a blank screen instead of a video.

What is the difference between following instructions and learning to program?

Following instructions is reproducing someone else's decisions. Learning to program is making your own: choosing an approach, building it, finding out what breaks, and fixing it. Real courses move a student from the first toward the second on purpose.

Are subscription coding lessons enough?

On their own, often not. A library of lessons can be a fine supplement, but without a structured progression, project feedback, and an instructor, many students stay in the tutorial trap: always following, never independently creating. A real education adds the missing pieces.
